Sea Turtles protection
Several endangered sea turtle species have chosen the tranquil Mexican Caribbean beaches to lay their eggs.
They prefer dim, quiet places, and like the warmth of the powdery white sand found in certain areas of the Mayan Riviera.
There are several places along the Mayan Riviera that have been officially declared as Sea Turtle Sanctuaries, such as Tulum, Xcacel or Xcacelito.
Here you can see the Green and Caguama (Caretta Caretta or Loggerhead) species of sea turtles lay their eggs during nesting season (May to October).
The eggs are laid at night, when the female sea turtles emerge from the sea and search for places on the beach to make their nests.
After laying their eggs, they cover their nests carefully and return to the water.
The baby sea turtles are born at night and are guided to the ocean by the light of the moon and stars, and the natural iridescence of the Caribbean.
Sea turtles are an endangered species, so it is forbidden to catch them or to take their eggs.
